This is a technique class for mixed levels based on Amira's book, Language of the Dance. We will work head to toe on wonderful and fun steps and combinations so that you can show off your dance skills to friends and family, or just enjoy them for yourself. We will work on shimmies, beautiful arms, hip articulations, traveling steps, upper body work, and of course, the lovely veil. We will also learn and use finger cymbals. Instructor will provide veils for the lovely veil dances, but requests that the student be prepared to purchase her own finger cymbals (available from the instructor for $25 at the first class) to get the full advantage of this class (do not buy your finger cymbals elsewhere - they usually will be of poor quality). Wear comfortable clothing that provides a smooth line, such as tank tops, leggings, bike shorts, sports bras, etc. It is best that you not wear loose shapeless clothing such as "sweats." The instructor's book "Language of the Dance" ($20) and a classroom music CD ($15) are also available for purchase (when purchased together it is $30). Hipscarves are recommended, and you will find that you feel the moves better if you are wearing something on your hipscarf is recommended. I have a limited number of hip scarves available at $45 each. You may also purchase hipscarves online at Salomes Tent (indicate it is for a class with Amira Jamal) or just wear some scarf or fabric around your hips so that your movements will be better noticed. You may wear socks, dance shoes, or go barefoot. |

Class Attire Dress comfortably but please do not wear sweat pants, loose t-shirts, jeans, anything too baggy or too tight. You may wear socks. Hermes Dance Sandals or half-soles, available from many on-line vendors, or at Teddy's Shoes (548 Mass Ave., Cambridge). I have had my Hermes sandals for about 25 years, and they wear well -- even for outdoor use. You may also wear shoes if they are dedicated dance shoes (i.e., not worn outside on the street, as we need to respect the dance floor of the studio). Hipscarf is recommended, and you will find that you feel the moves better if you are wearing something on your hips. |
