This is a technique class for mixed levels based on Amira's book, Language of the Dance. We will work head to toe on wonderful and fun steps and combinations so that you can show off your dance skills to friends and family, or just enjoy them for yourself. We will work on shimmies, beautiful arms, hip articulations, traveling steps, upper body work, and of course, the lovely veil. We will also learn and use finger cymbals.

Materials fee not required, but available from instructor (for $20 each) are finger cymbals, Language of the Dance (book with CD-Rom), Amira Jamal tote bag, and classroom music CD ($15, but $10 if purchased with the book).

Class Attire

Dress comfortably but please do not wear sweat pants, loose t-shirts, jeans, anything too baggy or too tight. You may wear socks. Hermes Dance Sandals or half-soles, available from many on-line vendors, or at Teddy's Shoes (548 Mass Ave., Cambridge). I have had my Hermes sandals for about 25 years, and they wear well -- even for outdoor use. You may also wear shoes if they are dedicated dance shoes (i.e. not worn outside on the street, as we need to respect the dance floor of the studio). Hipscarf is recommended, and you will find that you feel the moves better if you are wearing something on your hips.
