This class is designed to meet the needs of students who are in, or beyond, an intermediate level, and who would like to work towards becoming a professional dancer, or work toward improving their craft to dance for recitals and student shows. This class is also highly recommended for newly minted professional dancers who have been out dancing on their own for less than 10 years. Portions of each class in the second session will be spent on crafting a new Jewels of Jamal number.

Each week we will work on different topics, and the class itself will shape the content of each weekly class. There will be performance opportunities within the class itself and the student recital. We will be working on the various sections of a dance performance, including Making an Entrance, Veilwork, Beledi, Karsilima, Chiftitelli, and will have corresponding performance work each week.

A wide-array of middle eastern music will be used. Students are advised to purchase Language of the Dance at the beginning of the class session, as a study companion to this class.

Class Attire

You are expected to wear proper dance class attire. This includes, leotards, unitards, bike shorts & sports bras, cholis, harem pants, and dance skirts. Regular street attire is not recommended -- this includes sweat pants, loose t-shirts, jeans, anything baggy or tight. Footwear is recommended. The floor is carpeted.. Hermes Dance Sandals or half-soles are a perfect item and are available at Teddy's Shoes at 548 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, 617-547-0443. I have spoken with Steve Adelson, the owner of the store and he will make sure that he is stocked in all sizes during the summer. I have had my Hermes sandals for about 20 years, and they wear well -- even for outdoor use. You may wear high heels for this class as an option on footwear.
